NFL Draft: To Draft a Receiver Early or Not

Today we will be putting ourselves in the role of GM for several teams who need to draft a wide receiver. This draft class has long been stated as the next elite class and the depth is insane. Which puts into question is it worth it for several teams to draft a receiver with first round capital? This unique topic is to spark a little debate on whether or not these teams should go receiver or another need. This is not to say this is the route we see the teams going within the draft. The purpose of this is to play devil’s advocate for 3 teams projected to potentially take a receiver in round 1. We will take the role of GM for the team and give you our honest subjective opinions on the teams.

New York Jets

The New York Jets are one of the more interesting teams to look at in this draft. Their two biggest needs to us are offensive tackle and wide receiver. I have debated whether or not they should go Jerry Jeudy or Ceedee Lamb. Looking at the amount of success rate by position from an article done by bleacher report in 2015 we see a big of interesting statistics. The article shows that over a 10 year trend tackles have a bit higher success rate of all pro and pro bowl status compared to receivers. Even more recently as of last year receivers drafted in rounds 2 and 3 have been having a ton of success. D.K. Metcalf, A.J. Brown and Deebo Samuel all contributed last year and were taking in round 2. Juju Smith-Schuster, Kenny Golladay, Chris Godwin, Cooper Kupp, D.J. Chark and Cortland Sutton were all day 2 prospects.

The Jets currently have two third round picks and a second round pick. To me yes the drafts could draft Jerry Jeudy or Ceedee Lamb and that could be a terrific pick. Yet it seems that there can always be quality talent within day two of the draft. With the offensive tackles this year having a huge dip after the four top players it could be incentive to wait on their star receiver. Getting a franchise tackle could benefit this team more now than ever in Darnold’s development. Waiting on a receiver seems like the right move to do for long term success as they can hit in the second or third round. As the GM I would take a tackle with the 11th pick and then grab a talented wide receiver with the second round pick.

Could Lamb become the next great Jet?

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers seem to be in position to grab at least one of the elite receivers if they choose to do so. Yet again with limited picks they could go another route. Quality defensive lineman and cornerbacks are limited in this draft in this draft class. We have already discussed how there is an abundance of receivers in this class who can succeed in this draft. This is what I would do if I was the 49ers. With the 13th overall pick I would try to grab Javon Kinlaw if he is there to replace DeForest Buckner. If he is not then I would try and pursue the next best player available on defense. With the second pick they could take a receiver or even trade back. By trading back they can still grab a quality wide out and gain draft capital.

Minnesota Vikings

It makes sense that the Vikings would be a team to draft a wide receiver early to replace Stefon Diggs. However to me that is the last thing this team should do. The offense they have does not demand to have two big time wide receivers. I could see Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison having an increased role in the passing game. Irv Smith Jr could also have a larger role in this offense. With their first two round picks as the GM I would attack the secondary and the defensive or offensive line. This team needs to draft a cornerback as they are super weak there. With the talent of receivers in this draft class I would wait to grab a top notch talent. They have plenty of picks to even move up if need be.

These are three teams we think could draft a wide receiver but there are reasons to them not to. Teams like the Eagles and Raiders in my opinion need to grab a receiver early to bolster their receiving core. Again the purpose of this was to just play devil’s advocate and to say what I would do as the GM of these teams. Most of my arguments are up for debate and this does not necessarily mean I will projecting these teams to go this route. However in order to keep it fun it is interesting to see who can draft a wide receiver early verse late. With the draft coming up we will revealing our mock draft next week!
