The weather for any game can impact the style of play and outcomes for the teams. The forecast for the game looks to be quite pleasant. It will be partly cloudy with a high of 70 and a low of 50. There should be a slight breeze coming from the northwest and no precipitation at the moment. Of course being in Miami the weather could change at any given moment. The current forecast should allow for a fast pace game and kickers should not be impacted at all.
Spread and Over/Under
The opening line for the match up was a 1 ½ spread with the Chiefs being the favorite. Recently the line has dipped to a 1 point spread with the Chiefs still holding as small favorites. In the Super Bowl favorites are 35-17 straight up and 28-20-2 against the spread. Only six times has a favorite won the game straight up but did not cover making the spread almost meaningless. The over under line started at 54 and has held firm only increasing by ½ point at most sportsbooks. The over under record is 27-25 in favor of the over. Only 11 Super Bowls have gone above 50 points. Last year’s Super Bowl set the record for the lowest point score mark at 16.
Chiefs Offensive Stats vs 49ers Defensive Stats
The Chiefs averaged 28.2 points per game this year on offense ranking 5th in the NFL. They ranked 6th in total overall yards per game at 379.2 yards and 5th in passing at 281.1 yards per game. Rushing was a weak spot where they only averaged 98.1 yards per game coming in at 23rd. The 49ers defense ranked 8th in points against letting up 19.4. They ranked 2nd in overall defense with 281.8 yards against and were 1st in pass defense letting up 169.2 yards. They also let up 112.6 yards on the ground which ranked 17th.
49ers Defensive Stats vs Chiefs Defensive Stats
The 49ers were 2nd in points per game. They averaged 381.1 yards per game which was 4th and excelled at the run with 144.1 yards rankings 2nd. They were 13th in passing offense with 237 yards per game. Defensively the Chiefs were 7th in points against letting up 19.2 points against. They excelled against the pass only letting up 221.4 yards a game which was 8th. They were 26th in rush defense letting up 128.2 yards per game and were 17th overall with 349.6 yards per game.
Chiefs X Factors
The Chiefs offensive X factor is going to be the Eric Fisher. We know that the Chiefs have playmakers but none of that is going to matter if Fisher cannot hold up. He is going to have to stop Nick Bosa on his side of the ball. I expect the other lineman to be used in combination to stop everyone else making Fisher’s responsibility more. On the defensive side of the ball it is all Chris Jones. Jones is an unstoppable force that can wreck game plans. He will have to blow up this 49ers rush game and control the gaps. If that happens and he continue to pass rush it will be very tough for the 49ers to win.
49ers X Factors
The 49ers will have to get a huge game out of George Kittle. He needs to dominate with blocking and make his presence in the passing game. He is a mismatch for any defense and will have to make big catches in the big moments. Kittle is their clear X factor. On the defensive side it is Richard Sherman for us. Sherman will have a huge responsibility of shutting down either Tyreek Hill or Travis Kelce. He is a true shut down corner who can take away opposing teams best players. If he can take away one of the Chiefs weapons the 49ers can win. This will help the dominant pass rush get after Mahomes.
I expect this game to be a very close contest throughout the majority of the contest. The Chiefs could jump out to a slight lead early behind Mahomes’ arm. However I fully expect the 49ers defense to settle in and control the game. I believe firmly Kyle Shanahan will come up with a plan to attack the Chiefs weaknesses. This game will come down to the trenches and the 49ers have the edge on both sides in my opinion. Give me the 49ers 27-24 to win 6th Super Bowl.
